How to Care for Your Soy Wax Candle: 7 Simple Tips for the Perfect Burn

Make every burn count with our guide to getting the most from your soy wax candles.

There's something special about lighting a candle. The soft glow, a beautiful fragrance and that little moment of calm it brings to your day.

At Synergy Wellness, we believe these simple rituals can make everyday life feel a little more intentional.

But did you know that the way you care for your candle can make a real difference to how it burns, how long it lasts and how well it performs?

Whether you're new to soy wax candles or have a collection of favourites, these seven simple tips will help you enjoy every last moment.

1. Always Trim Your Wick

One of the easiest ways to look after your candle is to trim the wick before each burn.

Aim for a wick length of approximately 5mm.

A wick that's too long can produce a larger, less stable flame, creating excess soot and causing your candle to burn faster than necessary.

Keeping your wick neatly trimmed helps encourage a cleaner, more controlled burn.

Our tip: Allow the candle to cool completely before trimming. You can use a wick trimmer or a small pair of scissors, making sure to remove any loose wick debris before relighting.

2. Let the Wax Melt All the Way Across

This is one of the most important things to remember, particularly when lighting a new candle for the first time.

Allow your candle to burn long enough for the melted wax to reach the edges of the container, creating an even pool of liquid wax across the surface.

Why does this matter?

If you repeatedly extinguish your candle before the wax has melted across the top, it can develop what's known as tunnelling.

Tunnelling happens when the candle burns down through the centre, leaving a ring of unused wax around the sides.

Not only can this affect how your candle looks, but it can also mean you don't get the full enjoyment from the wax you've purchased.

Our tip: On the first burn, allow enough time for an even melt pool to develop, while always following the candle's recommended maximum burn time. Don't leave a candle burning indefinitely just to reach the edges.

3. Don't Burn Your Candle for Too Long

Although it's important to allow an even melt pool to form, burning your candle for too long isn't beneficial either.

Extended burning can cause the container to become excessively hot and may affect the wick and overall performance of the candle.

As a general guide, many container candles recommend a maximum burn time of around three to four hours, but always follow the specific safety instructions supplied with yours.

Our tip: Think of lighting your candle as part of a relaxing evening ritual rather than something that needs to burn continuously throughout the day.

4. Keep Your Candle Away from Draughts

Have you ever noticed your candle flame flickering excessively or leaning to one side?

This can happen when it's placed near an open window, doorway, fan or air vent.

Draughts can cause uneven burning, increase soot and make your candle burn less efficiently.

Our tip: Choose a stable, heat-resistant surface away from moving air, curtains and anything flammable. A calm environment isn't just good for your relaxation — it's good for your candle too.

5. Keep the Wax Clean

Your candle's wax should be kept free from dust, used matches, wick trimmings and other debris.

Anything that falls into the wax can interfere with the way your candle burns and may create a fire hazard.

Before lighting, take a quick look at the surface and remove any debris once the wax is completely cool.

Our tip: If your candle has a lid, replace it once the candle has fully cooled to help keep dust away between uses. Our Candles come with a dust bag to store your candle in between burns, ensure the candle has cooled before using the dust bag.

6. Store Your Candle Somewhere Cool and Dry

Soy wax is sensitive to temperature changes, so where you store your candle matters.

Direct sunlight, radiators and warm windowsills can cause the wax to soften or change appearance. Excessive heat can also affect the fragrance over time.

Keep your candle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to help preserve its quality.

You might occasionally notice a slightly uneven or frosted appearance on the surface of soy wax.

This is a natural characteristic of soy wax and doesn't necessarily mean there's anything wrong with your candle.

7. Know When It's Time to Say Goodbye

As tempting as it can be to burn every last drop, it's important to know when to stop using your candle.

When only a small amount of wax remains at the bottom, continuing to burn it can cause the container to overheat.

Our tip: Stop burning your candle when approximately 1cm of wax remains, or sooner if directed by the manufacturer's instructions.

And remember, never leave a burning candle unattended, keep it away from children and pets, and always extinguish it before leaving the room or going to sleep.
